A group of thieves walked out of a small Southern California casino Monday with $100,000 in cash.
The heist suspects stole at least $100,000 from a secure area in Santa Ysabel Casino in what appeared to be a covert, organized operation, police told the Union Tribune.
"The suspects left a large amount of evidence on the scene,” said Sgt. Tom Evans with the San Diego Sheriffs Department. “We spent probably close to 16 hours yesterday interviewing witnesses, collecting that evidence and trying to process that scene.”
Deputies were assisted by the FBI and several other agencies, Evans said in a news conference Tuesday. He added that the suspects committed the heist between midnight and 8 a.m. Monday, although many of the details are still unknown.
The Santa Ysabel Casino near Julian opened in 2007 and is still relatively small, with about 350 slot machines, according to the casino’s website.
Revenue from the casino supports the Santa Ysabel Band of Kumeyaay Indians education and community, their website says.
