Virginia's Crackdown on Transporting Walnuts

Virginia's Crackdown on Transporting Walnuts

Virginia has expanded a temporary ban on transporting walnut plants and plant parts after a disease that kills the trees was found outside the original quarantine area.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says Goochland, Hanover and Powhatan counties and the city of Colonial Heights are now part of the quarantine area.

Articles that cannot be moved out of the area include logs, stumps, firewood, roots, branches, mulch and chips.

The state originally imposed the quarantine in July after Thousand Cankers Disease was detected in Chesterfield and Henrico counties. The city of Richmond was included because of its proximity to those localities.

The disease is caused by a fungus introduced by a beetle that tunnels beneath the bark.
