A Riverside County freeway that was the scene of a deadly California Highway Patrol shooting has reopened after an overnight closure but traffic remains slow.
Traffic was snarled for miles overnight on the State Route 91 in Corona before it was opened again as of 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Firefighters were called to an accident scene on the eastbound lanes of the highway just east of Main Street before 8 p.m. Tuesday. Moments later, firefighters heard gunfire and fled with one of the car accident victims.
The CHP says officers were responding to a single-car crash in the eastbound lanes when they were met by gunfire. Officers returned fire, killing one man.
No officers were hurt.
A law enforcement source told NBCLosAngeles a rifle was found near the person who was killed by police.
Images from a news helicopter showed firefighters and police officers trying to revive the wounded suspect. That person was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
