Three Injured in Transformer Explosion

Three Injured in Transformer Explosion

Three utility workers were sent to the hospital after an above-ground transformer exploded in front of an Anaheim apartment complex Wednesday.

The explosion occurred at 9:47 a.m. at the 2500 block of West Lincoln Avenue, said Margie Otto, a spokeswoman for Anaheim Public Utilities.

The three men were rushed to the hospital within minutes of the explosion with burns to their upper body. The degree of their burns was not immediately known but all were "talking and conscious," Otto said.

Yvonne Burke, a witness to the explosion, said the entire street shook dramatically.

"It appeared to me like the guy up in the truck stuck a connection up to the top and it just blew up," Burke said. "It was very frightening and weird, and a bunch of smoke. The people in the apartment building were running, they were scared for their life."

City officials shut off power on the block from Magnolia Avenue to Gain Street as a precaution, Otto said.

Power was expected to be restored within 4-6 hours.
