More than 2,900 illegal immigrants and immigration fugitives were taken into immigration custody this week -- with 84 convicted from San Diego.
The arrests were announced Wednesday by the by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Wednesday, which was the results of a seven-day targeted “Cross Check” enforcement operation.
Included in the local arrests was a 33-year-old Mexican man residing in San Diego, who was convicted of accessory to a homicide. Nearly 20 weapons were seized in San Diego as part of the operation.
“Cross Check” was the largest seven-day operation of its kind, and involved more than 1,900 ICE officers.
All of the 2,901 individuals taken into custody had prior criminal convictions including at least 1,282 illegal immigrants who had multiple criminal convictions. More than 1,600 of those arrested had felony convictions including manslaughter, attempted murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, drug trafficking, child abuse, sexual crimes against minors and aggravated assault.
Of the total 2,901 illegal immigrants arrested, 42 were gang members and 151 were convicted sex offenders. Arrests occurred in all 50 states and four U.S. territories.
