Six horses state officials said were starving and abused have been removed from property at 330 Hebron Road in Andover.
The state Department of Agriculture’s Animal Control Division investigated and said that six horses James Hemond owned were being kept in debris-filled paddocks and pastures. The horses were emaciated and lacking proper feed, water and shelter, officials said.
The Department of Agriculture and State Police went to the property on Friday and removed the horses, which will be examined by a veterinarian and rehabilitated at the Department of Agriculture’s Second Chance large animal facility at York Correctional Facility in Niantic.
When the horses are healthy, appropriate homes will be found.
