The armed robbery a man told UConn police happened inside an academic building at the University of Connecticut Storrs campus on Wednesday night never happened, UConn police said on Friday.
School officials are now working with the Tolland County State's Attorney's Office to determine if criminal charges will be filed against the person who reported that a man in his 30s, wearing a hospital-style mask and brandishing a gun approached the victim in the laboratory in the Torrey Life Science Building around 10:15 p.m. and demanded money.
The report prompted school officials to issue a campus-wide alert.
While investigating the report, the person claiming to be the victim could not provide information to help generate a composite of the robber and then admitted that there was no robbery, UConn police said. He had "fabricated it for personal reasons," according to a news release from school officials.
