Montgomery County Wants More Money for BRAC: Report

Montgomery County Wants More Money for BRAC: Report

Some major road projects are underway in our area to accommodate the BRAC transition. But Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett says his county needs nearly three times as much money as they’ve been allotted in order to pay for the construction work.

According to the Washington Examiner, Leggett has asked for $40 million in addition to the $28.2 million grant they have already acquired. Leggett has asked the county council to allocate that first grant to construction projects on Rockville Pike between the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the Medical Center Metro Station.

Leggett tells the Examiner that he hopes to get the additional funding from the federal government instead of turning to taxpayers for the money. But he also warns that it’s unlikely even that $68 million would cover all the costs associated with the move.

“The money that we anticipate getting from the federal government is not going to do everything that we need to do," Leggett told the Examiner, adding that the projects in Montgomery will cost "far more than the $300 million [the federal government set aside to fund BRAC projects] could ever provide."
