It's possible that students in Colton won't be able to ride a bus to school, but that decision hasn't been made yet.
The school board was considering eliminating buses to schools in order to save money, but on Thursday night decided to table the issue for now.
The board is trying to cut $14 million from the Colton Joint Unified School District's budget, reports The Sun.
They considered three different ways to chop transportation.
The first would eliminate all district-funded home-to-school transportation, according to The Sun. That would cut 41 jobs and save $1,817,000.
The second plan would provide buses only to areas that are considered unsafe for walking, reports The Sun. Only 18 jobs would be lost and the district would save an estimated $1,037,000.
Finally, the district considered increasing the distance students were expected to walk by half a mile for middle school, and one mile for high school. They would also limit buses to pedestrian-safe areas, according to The Sun. This plan could cut 14 jobs and save $909,000 from next year's budget.
Union leaders say they will meet with school officials to try to come up with less drastic options to cutting bus service to schools.
