A fire in Bloomington, Indiana, claimed the life of a 19-year-old student from Gary.
Renee Ohrn, 19, was asleep at a friend's place when the fire started around 3:30 a.m. at the Terra Trace Apartments.
Ohrn was a student at Indiana University.
The late-night fire sent residents, many of whom also attend Indiana University, scrambling from the building.
"I started running. I didn't know what was going on. Once I got outside, I saw the flames," one survivor said.
Seven people were injured, including a Bloomington police sergeant and a firefighter.
Ohrn's family and friends gathered Sunday in the Miller Beach area of Gary, where she grew up.
"She was a good person … always says I love you," Ohrn's grandmother, Paulette Cialdella said.
"She was prom queen, class president … very personable. Everybody in school liked her," said Pat Mullen, a family friend.
A cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
