Amish Horse and Buggy in Fatal St. Mary's Accident

Amish Horse and Buggy in Fatal St. Mary's Accident

A 12-year-old girl died when a Ford F-150 truck collided with a horse-drawn Amish buggy on Saturday night.

The accident happened at a traffic light at the intersection of Route 5 and Mount Wolf Road in St. Mary's County at 7:40 p.m.

Police said three people were in the buggy at the time of the crash.

The horse-drawn carriage entered the intersection when the light was green, according to investigators.  While the carriage was crossing, the light cycled through yellow to red.

Francis Jerome Brawner, 31, was driving the pickup involved in the crash, coming northbound on Route 5.  Police said that Brawner had a green light when he crossed into the intersection.

But the buggy had not yet cleared, and the two vehicles hit.  The force of impact ejected all three occupants of the buggy.  Two of the passengers were treated at Civista Medical Center and released.

The third occupant, 12-year-old Kathleen Stoltzfus, died of her injuries while receiving treatment.

The St. Mary's Sheriff's office said that after an initial investigation, neither speed nor intoxication were factors in the crash.
