Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill recently that would scale down the environmental laws holding back construction of a new NFL stadium in downtown Los Angeles.
The stadium has been rumored to be a potential home to the Chargers, if plans for a new stadium in San Diego fall through.
Brown argued that the state has too many regulations that are hindering economic progress. He said that building the new stadium would provide much-needed jobs. The bill he signed would send lawsuits against projects like the field to an appeals court, instead of requiring them to go through local courts too.
Environmentalists are upset about Brown’s stance. The Sierra Club argued that removing the local courts from the process would prevent residents from negotiating better pollution controls, traffic controls and community services for their neighborhood.
