A former National Archives employee is scheduled to appear in court to answer to charges of stealing from the agency that safeguards the nation's records.
Leslie Charles Waffen, 66, is charged with theft of United States property. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Greenbelt, Md., today.
A court document charging Waffen says officials seized 955 "sound recording items" from his home in October 2010.
Archives Inspector General Paul Brachfeld has said he cannot specify what records or recordings were associated with the Waffen case because prosecutors are close to a plea agreement. But he says many items are likely things the public has read about in history books.
Waffen worked at the National Archives and Records Administration for 40 years.
