Cabbies Plan Rally Outside Gov's Office Over Livery Cab Law

Cabbies Plan Rally Outside Gov's Office Over Livery Cab Law

Taxi drivers in New York City are objecting to legislation that would allow livery cabs to pick up street hails in the outer boroughs.

Hundreds of livery and yellow cab drivers, mechanics, base owners and others are expected to rally outside Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office in Manhattan Tuesday to call for changes to the bill before it becomes law.

New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers founder Fernando Mateo says permits created under the legislation would be worthless.

He says drivers won't be able to transfer, sell or borrow against them.

The bill was passed by the state Legislature in June and is awaiting the governor's signature.

Many cab drivers had previously supported the bill and rallied a few days ago outside Cuomo's office to demand the governor sign it.
