Postal Service Wants Chicago Opinions on Closings

The U.S. Postal Service on Tuesday will hold the first of eight community meetings to gather the public’s opinion on the proposed closure of 14 Chicago post offices.

The meeting will be held from to 6 to 8 p.m. at the Pui Tak Center, 2216 S. Wentworth Ave., in Chinatown.

The U.S. Postal Service announced in late July plans to close 3,700 post offices nationally, 14 of which could be located in Chicago. The postal service has taken a hit because of increased digital shopping and communication. It saw a $8.5 billion loss in revenue just last year.

The USPS has begun looking at other locations for closure with plans to start closings in December. Offices will be evaluated on traffic, revenue and proximity to other postal offices.

Mail delivery to homes will not be affected by the closures.
