Riverside County Students Need Proof of Whooping Cough Shot

Nearly 98 percent of students in Riverside County have been vaccinated against whooping cough, but as of Thursday 200,000 students still have not provided proof of the vaccination, according to county health officials.

The Tdap shot is mandatory for all students between 7th and 12th grade. Without the shot, students are not allowed to attend classes.

In August. Gov. Jerry Brown signed legislation to allow districts to conditionally admit students who can't show proof of vaccination for up to30 days. The extra time deadline expired earlier this month.

More than 9,000 people contracted the illness last year, 10 infants died from whopping cough in California.

It's unclear what the school district will do to achieve 100 percent.

"For the health and safety of all students, school staff, families and the public, I urge parents to comply with the law and have their children vaccinated or complete a vaccination waiver,"  said Superintendent Kenneth Young.

Whooping cough is a very contagious bacterial disease. Victims suffer uncontrollable and violent coughing.
