NY Reconsiders New DMV Rule Letting Drivers Skip Eye Exam for Renewal

A state official says the Cuomo administration is putting on hold a new policy that allowed drivers to skip an eye exam when renewing a license.

The change was made to make it easier for New Yorkers to renew licenses by mail or online.

The state official says that plan is being reconsidered until physicians can be consulted.

The official says an independent affirmation beyond simply a driver's statement they could pass will be required before an eye exam can be skipped.

Eliminating eye exams began Wednesday as part of streamlining at the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Six states allow license renewals without eye exams.
