NY's New "Still Birth Certificate" Called Humane

A veteran assemblyman says New York's new law to create a certificate of still birth is a humane measure that will comfort many grieving families.

Assembly Health Committee Chairman Richard Gottfried of Manhattan says he hopes the measure will help diminish some of the pain expectant parents feel from the tragedy.

The new certificate will be issued to parents when a child is born dead.

It replaces what was called a "fetal death certificate.''

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed the bill into law.

State Sen. William Larkin of Orange County and Assemblywoman Sandy Galef of Westchester sponsored the law, which should take effect in six months.
