The project to extend Metrorail service to Dulles Airport could go over budget by as much as $150 million, officials with the project said yesterday, according to the Washington Post. That amount represents about 5 percent of the total $2.8 billion budget for the project, dubbed the Silver line.
The first phase of rail line will link Falls Church, Tysons Corner, and Reston. If it goes over budget, the overrun will need to be paid by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Fairfax and Loudon counties. Completion of the initial stage could be delayed from the projected summer of 2013 date to well into the following year if the funding issues aren’t resolved.
The final phase of the project would connect Reston to Dulles airport, but funding for that phase has not been finalized.
