The Irving Fire Department will remain at the scene of a landfill fire until smoldering mulch no longer produces smoke.
The fire broke out at the Irving landfill along Hunter Ferrell Road at about 7:15 a.m. Thursday.
The fire was contained to the mulch pile and extinguished shortly after firefighters arrived.
“We believe the mulch pile fire is the result of the extreme drought conditions that have affected the entire North Texas region,” said Brenda Haney, P.E. director of solid waste services for the City of Irving. “It is not unusual for mulch piles to catch fire in these environmental conditions. We appreciate the immediate response of the Irving Fire Department and their efficient assistance with containing this fire.”
Officials said it would not be unusual for a mulch pile to continue to smolder and produce smoke thoughout the day.
