Rivers Casino Funnels $2.6M to Des Plaines

While other communities in Illinois suffer through tough economic times, trying to figure out where to cut spending or how to raise more cash, one community is set to collect a windfall.

Northwest suburban Des Plaines is getting $2.6 million in gambling tax revenue from the new Rivers Casino, according to the Daily Herald. And that's just for about two weeks in July, when the casino opened, and August, its first full month of operation.

But now the municipality must decide when it's going to pay the state $10 million, which Des Plaines agreed to in order to acquire the license for the casino.

The town must also contribute a percentage of its take to 10 disadvantaged communities chosen by the state.

Gov. Pat Quinn is still considering legislation that would add even more casinos in Illinois, including one in Chicago.
