It was a hunting trip that Henry David Metcalf will never forget. Instead of taking a life, he ended up saving one.
Metcalf discovered a Vineland man who had been missing for eight days.
Charles “Joe” Taylor, 62, was last seen around 3 p.m. on September 26 on Grant Avenue and Brunetta Drive. Taylor suffered a life-altering stroke around 3 years ago and is a Type II diabetic, according to police. He has limited mobility and severely affected speech as a result of the stroke.
On Tuesday around 5:15 p.m., while hunting with his friend David Meyers near Elmer Road in Vineland, Metcalf noticed a strange smell, according to the Courier Post. That’s when he found Taylor lying on the ground. Metcalf told police he immediately knew it was Taylor because he had read about him in the newspaper.
The Post reports that Taylor was conscious and began to wave his arms. He also kept bringing his fingers to his lips, indicating that he wanted a cigarette, which Metcalf gave him.
Metcalf covered Taylor with some of his clothes while Meyers called 911. When officers arrived, Metcalf shouted to guide rescuers to him and Taylor, about 300 feet from the road, according to the Post.
The Post reports that Taylor had to endure about 2 inches of rain and 44-degree temperatures during the eight days he was missing. He was taken to the South Jersey Healthcare Regional Medical Center. His condition is unknown at this time.
