An 8-year-old Caroline County boy, who was lost in the Virginia wilderness for 5 nights, could go home from the hospital today.
Robert Wood, Jr. was with his father in the North Anna Battlefield Park, just north of Richmond, when the two got separated. Thousands of people turned out at the park over the next several days to search for Robbie, who is autistic and does not speak.
On Friday, he was found laying in the fetal position, near a rock quarry close to the park. Wood's grandmother spoke Sunday about the ordeal. Norma Jean Williams says she was preparing herself for the news her grandson was dead when she got word he was found alive. Williams says she blames the boy's father for letting Robbie slip away.
She says her grandson has bug bites and a few scrapes and bruises, but is otherwise in good health. Doctors have been keeping the boy at a Richmond hospital for observation.
Williams says she wants to thank all the people who searched for her grandson, especially the man who found him.
She also believes the fact that Robbie didn't realize the danger he was in probably saved his life.
