A historic October snowstorm that forced the cancellation of school for thousands of schoolchildren in Connecticut and cut off power to nearly a million homes has also made several towns change their Halloween plans.
Concerned about downed power lines and damaged trees, local officials in Fairfield, Avon, Bristol, Hartford, Coventry and Danbury have suggested postponing Halloween until later in the week or canceled it all together.
"With so many wires down ... the sidewalks will not be safe for pedestrians (on Monday) night," Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton told The Hartford Courant.
Instead, Boughton asked parents to bring their kids to the Danbury Fair Mall to trick-or-treat.
The storm dumped as much as 22 inches of snow on northwestern Connecticut and anywhere from 6 to 12 inches on central Connecticut.
