Maryland Stocking Waterways With Thousands of Trout

Maryland Stocking Waterways With Thousands of Trout

Maryland fisheries officials say trout stocking is under way statewide.

The Department of Natural Resources says about 25,000 one-pound rainbow and golden trout are being stocked along with smaller numbers of brown trout and larger rainbow and golden trout. The stocking began in early October and is expected to be completed by the first week of November.

DNR says stocking dates and locations are dependent on water flow and temperatures.

Most of the trout stock comes from the state's trout hatchery in Hagerstown.  In addition, 90,000 trout are purchased from private, commercial hatcheries.

DNR says most of the trout they stock are one-year-olds that weigh a little more than 1.5 pounds.  In addition, the hatchery mixes a few "trophy" fish in with each release.  Those fish can be 3 to 5 years old, and weigh up to nine pounds.
