Somerset County paid nearly $16 million dollars for Skillman Village in Montgomery Township on Tuesday.
Plans call for transforming the 250-acre tract into Skillman Park.
The land was once home to the New Jersey Village for Epileptics, which was founded in 1898. It became the New Jersey Neuro-Psychiatric Institute in 1953 and was the North Princeton Developmental Center until 1998.
Montgomery spent more than $16 million to tear down 100 buildings, including a morgue, hospital and power plant.
Mayor Mark Caliguire told the Courier News of Bridgewater the land "was not only an eyesore but dangerous" because kids were breaking into buildings in hopes of seeing ghosts.
