Delaware Lumber Company Closes After Nearly a Century

The U.L. Harman lumber company will close on Saturday, after nearly a century in business. The company is located in the small community of Marydel, in Kent County, Delaware.

The bad economy means fewer people can afford home re-modeling and repairs, says store owner Gerald Harman. But the decison wasn't an easy one, given U.L. Harman's long history.

"We've had five generations work here and it's hard to give up." says Harman.

U.L. Harman was founded in 1913 as a flour and feed mill, by Gerald Harman's great grandfather. The company started transitioning into the lumber business in the late 1930's.

Six workers will be laid off, but Harman says he will keep one employee, to help sell off remaining inventory after doors close on Saturday.
