Inmate Clings to Underside of Bus in Escape Attempt

An inmate tried to hitch a ride out of of the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic by clinging to the underside of a bus, according to sheriff's deputies.

Gamaliel Martinez, 22, attemped to escape early Tuesday when he was waiting with other inmates for a transfer to court, deputies said. He slipped out of his handcuffs, removed his easily recognized blue jail shirt and crawled under an inmate transport bus, deputies said.

Deputies noticed his absence when he was no longer part of a four-inmate security chain linked by handcuffs. They searched the secure, walled-in bus area and found Martinez clinging to a bus undercarriage in a white shirt, said Capt.  Mike Parker of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

He was returned to the maximum security jail and assigned a heightened security level.

A object found nearby was probably crafted in the jail and used to release the handcuffs, Parker said.

Martinez was serving a three-year sentence for robbery. He was scheduled for a court hearing Tuesday morning on additional robbery charges.
