San Diego’s oldest operating fire station has a new look.
Fire Station 4, located just down the street from Petco Park in Downtown San Diego, saw several upgrades over the weekend, including a new sign, flags and better decorations inside the station.
Firefighters at the station hand-painted a black relief at the top of the fire station, which is a San Diego historical landmark.
Over the years, the station fell into disrepair, said Captain Javier Mainar from Fire Station 4 at a tour of the upgraded station Monday morning. Visitors and residents driving by the station often did not know what the building was. The new signs will bring recognition and pride to the station, Mainar said.
Council President Pro Tem Kevin Faulconer spent $5,500 from his discretionary budget to fund the upgrade -- “a relatively small amount of money but a big impact for community pride,” he said.
“It is a jewel that needed to be shinned up,” Faulconer said of the 73-year old fire station.
