A Dallas police officer was dragged a short distance after a traffic stop Friday morning, sparking a police chase.
Police said the patrol officer pulled over Blas San Juan, 28, for an expired registration at about 10 a.m. During the stop, officers learned the driver was wanted on a parole violation.
While trying to take San Juan into custody, the driver put the car into drive and pulled away -- taking a police officer with him.
The officer, dragged only a short distance, wasn't seriously injured and was treated at the scene.
Meanwhile, San Juan led police on a low-speed chase through the East Dallas neighborhood southwest of the intersection of Jim Miller Road and Military Parkway.
Through it all, he bumped two police cars and drove over lawns while neighbors stood by and witnessed the entire event.
San Juan finally stopped and surrendered along Wilkes Avenue and was taken into custody without further incident.
Police said officers had the neighborhood surrounded and the chase fell within the department's strict policy, just two patrol cars and a supervisor.
"There were so many officers that he wasn't allowed to go anywhere, basically, and the speeds weren't that fast. He just didn't want to stop," Sgt. Ric Terrones said.
NBC 5's Julie Tam, Ken Kalthoff and Ellen Goldberg contributed to this report.
