In 2006, a female Chula Vista police officer sued the department because they told her she couldn't participate in beauty pageants. Shortly after that, police fired her for stealing her fiancé’s engagement ring, and years of lawsuits followed.
Chula Vista police said they felt relieved that the case may be coming to an end for Deanna Mory. While parts of the case are still tied up in federal court, there are slim chances the former beauty queen will win.
“It’s been a very long process,” said Capt. Gary Wedge of the Chula Vista Police Department.
Mory has sued the department three times since being told she could not compete in beauty pageants as a police officer.
Last week, after nearly five years of going in and out of court, two judges ruled that the police were right to fire Mory for theft. CVPD said they think her federal case is likely to go anywhere.
“It's never been about personality,” said Wedge. “She was terminated for the conduct.”
