A Los Angeles police officer in North Hollywood Sunday fatally shot a man who was holding a rifle.
An officer sent to Vineland Avenue and Valerio Street about 5 a.m. about some people shooting in the air confronted a suspect described to the officer via radio, Los Angeles police Capt. Peter Whittingham said, speaking at the scene of the shooting.
"The individual had his hands behind his back,'' he said. "The officer told him to show his hands. He did and, in the process, pointed a weapon, which is a rifle, at the officer, and an OIS occurred.''
No officers were believed to have been fired upon, he said, adding that the suspect was alone when confronted.
Paramedics took the wounded man to Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where he was declared dead. His name was not made available. Apparently, he lived nearby.
