Family Friend Charged with Girl's Murder

Family Friend Charged with Girl's Murder

Jose Conception Sifuentes, 23, was charged with murder Tuesday morning in connection with the death of 10-year-old Jasmen Gonzalez, officials told NBC 5.

The Dallas County medical examiner's office said Monday that Gonzalez died of a stab wound to the chest.

Gonzalez went missing from her bedroom Saturday night during a gathering of friends and family.

Her body was found face down Sunday afternoon in the backyard of a home near the apartment her family was staying in while visiting family in Carrollton.  Gonzalez's family was in town visiting from Oklahoma.

Investigators interviewed at least a dozen people in connection with the girl's disappearance, including Sifuentes. Relatives told police the man disappeared from the gathering at about the time Gonzalez did.

In an interview with detectives, Sifuentes' "statements were inconsistent, including information regarding him leaving the location for an undisclosed amount of time and his purpose for leaving," according to the search warrant.

Since that time, Sifuentes has been named the sole person of interest in the case and detained on an ICE immigration hold.

His residence and his black Lincoln Navigator were searched Monday.  According to a search warrant, police found a knife and human blood in the vehicle.

An affidavit obtained by NBC 5 Monday morning confirmed there were signs that the girl was sexually assaulted.

Sifuentes was moved from Carrollton to the Dallas County Jail at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Carrollton police have called a news conference for 11:30 a.m.  We expect to learn more about the charge against Sifuentes at that time.

NBC 5's Randy McIlwain contributed to this report.
